Crab Swimsuit
Spotted at Pure London last week was the introduction ofKandumathiswimwear to the UK market, designs on the garments are unique to the nature of the Maldives.
In Vibrators for Everyone , the brand has taken the Maldives by storm – selling to more than twenty luxury resorts with its distinctive flower (Dhiggamma), Kashikeyo (Screwpine) and Crab (Kakuni).
The paintings were drawn by Nadee Rachey and designed into swimsuits by Yasra Jaleel and Ahmed Fauzan. The unusual brand name comes from a traditional Maldivian phrase which embodies the essence of a vulnerable but enduring life, It is Kandu – Ocean and Mathi – in it, meaning “in the ocean†or “at sea.†The company are planning their second collection which is inspired by what put Maldives on the map during ancient maritime trade – cowrie shells. Arab and North African traders sought after these shells as it was used as their currency back then.
